Reduce the Harm:
Switch to Compact Flourescent Bulbs

Switching from inefficient power hungry incandescent bulbs to compact flourescents (CFL's) is an easy way to make a big reduction on your ecological footprint. Consider the following:

  • You get the same amount of light from a 13 watt CFL as a 60 watt incandescent bulb. With an average lifetime rating of 12,000 hours, you save 47 watts for every hour.
  • That converts to a bulb lifetime savings of 564 kWh of electricity you don't pay for PER BULB.
  • You save $50 in electrical bills PER BULB over its 11 year life span
  • You save over $4.63 per year PER BULB.
  • You reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 650 pounds PER BULB over its 11 year life span.
  • You reduce your carbon output this year by 59 pounds PER BULB.

Other benefits to consider:

  • Electrical power often comes from power plants using fossil fuels such as coal. Reducing your electicity reduces emissions of NOx, SOx and Mercury (a CFL will contribute 4.65 milligrams less mercury over its lifetime than an incandescent bulb).
  • Water savings are significant because a typical coal powerd plant evaporates 3 gallons of water for every kWh of electricity produced. You could reduce water consumption for power plants by nearly 1700 gallons of water over the lifetime of your CFL.
  • CFL's emit less heat. When your air conditioner is running during the summer, CFL's will save you 62 watts per hour rather than 47 watts.
