Green Ambassadors
APES 2009-10

The Green Ambassadors project is designed to allow students to begin working on solving some of the world's environmental problems. Students learn about green solutions like systems thinking, composting, water conservation, organic food production,  and green living to ensure our youth can live a life without damaging the environment. The students use what they have learned to put on events that inspire their communities to become part of the green solutions listed above. These are called “earth positive events” (EPEs):

Level 1 EPE: No knowledge needed to do this. Students furnishes muscle/labor, time, and/or equipment or technical expertise needed for EPEs that are planned by someone else (25 points per hour on average, documented on time sheet, signed by EPE Level 3 expert or Team EARTH instructors).

Level 2 EPE: Knowledge of the event required. Help with planning, advertising, producing, and carrying out other students' EPEs (50 points per hour on average, documented on time sheet, description given of expertise used and how a contribution to the EPE's success was made, and signed by EPE Level 3 or Team EARTH instructors).

Level 3 EPE: Become an expert and be the driver of the EPE, get a community mentor/resource person/expert, plan, produce, advertise, and find helpers to carry out an EPE that is "your or your group's baby" (250 points per semester)(students must get through at least step 4 by end of semester; each step will be documented and signed by you, your community expert, your helpers, and your instructor/s).

EARTH POSITIVE EVENTS need to be connected to the GREEN acronym:

G = Get Connected

R = Recycle organics

E = Encounter Water

E = Eat Green

N = Natural living

Steps to Level 3 EPE:

  1. find an issue or technique that is GREEN related that interests you
  2. become an expert at understanding it and/or doing it
  3. connect with a community expert, resource person, or mentor (someone that knows how to do this that is a real person)
  4. produce a presentation / game / or lesson plan that shows your expertise and shows others how they can be a part of the solution. It needs to +++positively+++ inspire people to take action (-negative scare, doom, and gloom not allowed-)
  5. get the help of other students, community experts, and sponsors to make an Earth Positive Event possible
  6. get the event endorsed by your instructor(s)
  7. advertise to your targeted audience
  8. carry out the event
  9. measure the difference your event has made
